Recipe for Mulled Wine

We spent the weekend in New York City, visiting friends and being a little festive. We spent Saturday afternoon at Rolf’s, imbibing in some holiday cocktails. I’m sharing my favorite recipe for mulled wine, which I plan to make a couple of times at home before Christmas.

When it’s chilly and snowing and nearing Christmas Day, I often find myself craving evenings at home, red wine over white and all things cozy. My favorite mulled wine recipe combines some of these best things about the holidays. The wonderful aromatics from delicious spices fill up our home with scents of the season and add a festive flair to afternoons/evenings at home.

I tweaked this recipe slightly to lean more on herbs vs. sweetener. The photos are all from Rolf’s, a German bar in NYC that goes all-our for Christmas with the decor and cocktail menu. It inspired me to put this cocktail list on the top of my “things to make” at home this upcoming weekend.

Original Recipe from Ina Garten, my tweaks noted accordingly


4 cups apple cider (I like organic or low sugar cider)

1 (750-ml) bottle red wine, such as Cabernet Sauvignon (you definitely want to use a bottle of wine you would enjoy drinking!)

1/4 cup honey (I use a bit less honey and a few more spices)

2 cinnamon sticks (I double up!)

1 orange, zested and juiced

4 whole cloves

3 star anise (if you don’t have you can skip – I don’t love including it)

4 oranges, peeled, for garnish


Combine all ingredients into a large pot and bring to boil, then simmer for about ten minutes. I like serving in Christmas mugs or these tall red wine glasses from Crate & Barrel. You can keep on low heat, but it’s important not to overcook so you don’t burn off all of the alcohol. Which we know is one of the best parts!

Serve with a cinnamon stick or orange peel if you’re feel extra festive. Enjoy!
